10 Trudeau Truths with Jocelyne Hernandez
1. What inspired you to pursue a career in human services?
From a young age, I have always had a strong desire to help others. As the eldest daughter of a single mother and two younger siblings, I naturally took the role of nurturer and advocate within my family. These early experiences guided me towards a career in social work. I pursued and obtained my undergraduate degree in social work to empower, advocate for, and support children and families. This has also led me to pursue a master’s degree in ABA to continue this goal.
2. What do you find most rewarding about your job?
What I find most rewarding about my job is witnessing my clients’ growth and progress. I love seeing them achieve important milestones and empowering them throughout that journey. I especially value hearing from parents about our support and treatment’s positive impact on their child’s life.
3. Can you describe a memorable moment or success story from your time working at Trudeau?
One of my proudest success stories here at Trudeau is the close bond I developed with one of my clients. When she first started, she wanted nothing to do with me, but over time, we built a strong, trusting bond. Not only did I get to witness her growth, but she also taught me so much to help me as a future BCBA.
4. What’s something about people with differing abilities (or working with them) that you wish other people knew or better understood?
One thing I wish more people understood about individuals with disabilities is their strengths, abilities, and potential. Every individual is unique, and with the right support, they can grow and achieve so much more. Working with individuals with disabilities has shown me how resilient, intelligent, and determined they are, and I wish more people recognized the importance of patience, empathy, and inclusion.
5. What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend?
I love spending quality time with my dog, friends, and family. Lately, my family and I have been going out for breakfast on Sundays. It’s something simple but meaningful to me and has quickly become something I look forward to.
6. Favorite book, movie, and/or TV show.
I am not a big TV person, but my favorite show is This Is Us. I love this show so much that I have rewatched it, something I rarely do!
7. Do you have any pets?
I have a pet dog named Dulce. I rescued her from a shelter in Texas when she was just three months old, and she recently turned two. Since the day I brought her home, we have been inseparable. She has truly been such a blessing, bringing so much happiness and unconditional love into my life!
8. What’s your favorite food?
Coming from a Mexican household, of course, my favorite food is Mexican food. However, I have to say that Peruvian food is a close second. It is so delicious, and I recommend everyone to try it!
9. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I would love to travel to Japan! It is my dream destination, and I hope to visit one day during cherry blossom season.
10. What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
A fun fact about me is that I love sneakers! I have been collecting sneakers since a young age, and now I have over 50 pairs in my collection.
