A Day in the Life: What Happens Inside Trudeau’s Adult Community-Based Day Program
Trudeau’s community-based day program is built around each person’s interests, strengths, and goals. Throughout the day, people take part in meaningful volunteer opportunities, build relationships, explore new experiences, and enjoy time in the community. Because services happen beyond the walls of a building, each day can look a little different depending on where people want to go, what they want to try, and how they want to be involved.
Volunteering That Makes a Real Contribution
Volunteer work is one of the meaningful ways people share their time, talents, and interests with the community. Across Rhode Island, participants support local charities, help with environmental efforts, and contribute to causes that matter to them. These are real contributions, not tasks created simply to fill a day. People are valued for what they bring, and the organizations they support often count on their help.
In the fall, those opportunities often expand. Community cleanups continue while the weather allows, and food pantries and charitable organizations begin preparing for the holiday season. For many people, September and October bring new chances to lend a hand, connect with familiar faces, try something new, and feel proud of the role they play in the community.
“Everyone wants to feel that they matter and that they have something meaningful to offer,” says Melissa Charpentier, Director of Adult Services at the Trudeau Center. “When someone spends the day giving back in a way that reflects their interests and strengths, they leave knowing they made a difference. That sense of purpose, pride, and belonging is powerful for the person and for the community around them.”
Connection Built Into the Day
Trudeau understands that relationships are a vital part of meaningful life. Community service, skill building, and social opportunities are woven together so people can spend time with others, strengthen friendships, discover new interests, and build a sense of belonging in the places they know and enjoy.
That sense of connection matters deeply. Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities may not always have the same access to social opportunities as others, so staff take time to learn what feels comfortable, enjoyable, and meaningful for each person. Support is offered in a way that respects individual preferences, encourages choice, and helps each person participate as fully as they want to.
Building Skills For the Future Each Person Chooses
The day program also gives people opportunities to build everyday skills that support greater independence, confidence, and choice. Trudeau’s Community Day Support Services help people practice practical and confidence-building skills, including safety awareness, self-advocacy, self-determination, and social skills. Each person’s path can grow and change over time as their interests, choices, comfort level, and personal goals evolve.
Supportive Relationships Make Each Day Possible
Direct Support Professionals help make each day possible by getting to know people well, offering encouragement, and providing support in ways that honor each person’s choices and abilities. National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week takes place September 13 to 19, 2026, making it a meaningful time to recognize the staff whose relationships, creativity, and care help people feel supported, respected, and able to shape days that feel purposeful and their own.
“When an individual finds their place in the community, it creates a foundation for everything else,” says Charlotte Higham, Vice President of Adult Services at the Trudeau Center. “Purpose, confidence, and real connection are what make a life full, and our staff are the ones building that alongside each person, day after day.”
