From Early Intervention to Adulthood: One Family’s 21-Year Journey with Trudeau

This summer, Danny Comella turned 21 and began his transition from Trudeau’s Early Intervention and children’s services into Adult Services – a milestone that his mother, Lisa, didn’t want to let pass without saying thank you.

Lisa recently wrote to us to share what more than two decades of partnership with Trudeau, and one team member in particular, has meant to her family. With her permission, we’re sharing her story.

A Partnership That Started at the Beginning

Danny has been receiving services through Trudeau since his time in Early Intervention, the program that supports infants and toddlers with developmental delays and disabilities from birth to age three. Over the years that followed, as Danny grew and his family’s needs changed, one person remained a steady, familiar presence: Julie O’Connor.

“Over the years, we have had the privilege of working closely with Julie O’Connor,” Lisa wrote, “and now that Danny has turned 21 and is transitioning to Adult Services, I could not let this milestone pass without expressing my sincere appreciation for everything Julie has done for our family.”

An Advocate the Family Could Count On

For families raising a child with special needs, the road includes constant transitions, new programs, new questions, new challenges to navigate. Lisa says Julie was there for all of it.

“Throughout our many years working together, Julie has been exceptionally responsive, knowledgeable, professional, and compassionate. She has consistently gone above and beyond to provide guidance, answer questions, and help us navigate the many challenges and transitions that come with raising a child with special needs. Quite simply, she has been one of the most valuable resources and strongest advocates our family has had since Danny was born.”

“Julie has always treated our family with kindness, respect, and genuine care, and her dedication to the individuals and families she serves is evident in everything she does. We are truly grateful for her support and partnership over the years, and she has made a lasting impact on our lives.”

Beginning a New Chapter in Adult Services

As Danny moves into Trudeau’s Adult Services programs, Lisa wanted to make sure Julie’s impact was recognized, not just by her family, but by her colleagues and supervisors as well.

“As we transition to Adult Services, we will greatly miss working with Julie. I wanted to take a moment to ensure that her supervisors know what an outstanding employee and resource she has been to our family.”

Lisa also extended her gratitude to everyone who supported Danny throughout his years in children’s services, and shared that her family is looking forward to continuing their relationship with Trudeau as they begin this next chapter together.

Congratulations, Danny

Stories like Danny’s are why Trudeau has supported children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1964. From a child’s first services in Early Intervention to the transition into adult programs, our teams are committed to walking alongside families for as long as they need us, and it means everything when families like the Comellas take the time to tell us it matters.

Congratulations to Danny on this milestone, and thank you, Julie, for 21 years of showing up for this family.
