The Power of Meaningful Work & How Employment Concepts Is Opening Doors in Rhode Island
A job is more than a paycheck. For adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, meaningful employment can be a gateway to confidence, community, and a fuller life. At the Trudeau Center, we believe that every person deserves the opportunity to work, contribute, and be valued for what they bring to the table. That belief is the engine behind Employment Concepts, Trudeau’s supported employment program helping adults with differing abilities find and maintain real jobs with real Rhode Island employers.
More Than Job Placement
Employment Concepts does more than match individuals to open positions. The program provides personalized support throughout the entire employment journey, from identifying a person’s strengths and interests, to preparing for interviews, to on-the-job coaching that helps both employees and employers build confident, lasting working relationships.
For adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), that kind of individualized, sustained support can make all the difference. Many of the individuals Trudeau serves have faced significant barriers to employment, not because of a lack of ability or desire, but because they haven’t had access to the right tools, connections, or advocates. Employment Concepts changes that equation.
“Work is one of the most powerful ways a person connects to their community and their own sense of identity,” Diane Varieur, Director of Adult Clinical Service. “When someone finds a job that fits who they are, you see a real transformation. They walk taller, they’re more engaged, they have something to talk about and look forward to. That’s what Employment Concepts is really about. It’s not just about filling a position. It’s about helping someone build a life they feel proud of.”
A Win for Everyone
Inclusive hiring isn’t just good for the people Trudeau supports. It’s good for business. Rhode Island employers who partner with Employment Concepts gain access to motivated, reliable employees while also benefiting from staffing support and available tax incentives. More than that, they become part of a community of businesses that are actively building more equitable, inclusive workplaces.
The story of Jacob, who found his dream job at Seven Stars Bakery through Employment Concepts, illustrates what’s possible when the right support meets the right opportunity. Jacob’s success reflects not just his own determination, but the careful, ongoing work of Employment Concepts staff who stayed by his side every step of the way.
“What people sometimes don’t realize is how much preparation and partnership goes into a successful job placement,” Charlotte Higham, VP of Adult Services said. “Our staff spend time really getting to know each person, understanding what motivates them, what environments they thrive in, and what kind of support they’ll need once they’re on the job. And we don’t disappear after day one. We stay involved, we check in with employers, and we problem-solve together when challenges come up. That consistency is what makes the difference between a job that lasts and one that doesn’t.”
The Connection Between Work and Wellbeing
Research consistently shows that employment plays a significant role in overall health and well-being. For adults with I/DD, the benefits extend well beyond financial independence. Work provides structure, purpose, and social connection. It builds self-esteem and opens doors to broader community participation. At Trudeau, Employment Concepts doesn’t exist in isolation. It works in concert with the Adult Day Program, Community Support Services, and residential programs to support individuals across every dimension of their lives.
That whole-person approach is central to how Trudeau has served Rhode Islanders with disabilities for more than 60 years. We don’t measure success by placement numbers alone. We measure it by the confidence we see grow in the individuals we support, and by the relationships built between workers and the workplaces that welcome them.
